How can an artistic process be captured on film? As part of the exhibition Katharina Grosse – WUNDERBILD, which will be on display at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg from June 2025, visitors will also have the opportunity to experience the creation process of some of Katharina Grosse’s large-scale works firsthand. The film by Claudia Müller, shot in the summer of 2024 at Katharina Grosse’s studio in Trechwitz, Brandenburg, focuses on the painting process and provides fascinating insights into the physical and mental dimensions of painting. It illustrates that the act of painting is not only an intellectual and tactile endeavor but also a physically performative process.
Unlike her large installations in indoor or outdoor spaces, which involve working with larger teams and require various planning phases, the paintings created in her studio are entirely dependent on her and her materials alone. In this cinematic documentation, viewers are directly involved in her considerations, such as selecting colors and the gestural moments that shape the physically performative nature of the painting process. Presented on a large screen, the film offers an immersive experience—creating the illusion of witnessing the works come to life in real time.
The focus is not on the finished painting but on the journey. The traces that Katharina Grosse continuously paints over accumulate as an energy flow on the canvas, eventually transforming into powerful paintings.
