VALIE EXPORT is one of the most influential female artist from Austria.
The wide variety of her artistic achievements makes her an icon of art history in the 20th and 21st centuries, and her work has had a crucial influence on numerous female and male artists of subsequent generations.
The film VALIE EXPORT- ICON AND REBEL by Claudia Müller provides a deep insight into her work, her love of experimentation and her use of new media and technologies, which she developed as back as the early 1960s and has pursued avidly during the course of her career. The film accompanies the artist on a journey to Norway and to her home town of Linz, where a VALIE EXPORT Research Centre is being developed. In Vienna the artist revisits the places where many of her works were created.
In her own country her work was hardly recognized right up until the early 1990s. For decades her earlier pieces, such as the Tap and Touch Cinema or Action Pants: Genital Panic were dismissed as scandalous.
The film features international artists such as Marina Abramovic, Carolee Schneemann and Kiki Smith, who describe their experience of working with VALIE EXPORT and the influence she has had on art history.
Texts by Nobel Prize awarded writer Elfriede Jelinek complement the film.
